170th MGCP Concentração

February 15, 2020
Barcarena Gunpowder Factory
National

The 1st Concentração of the year took us back to the Barcarena Gunpowder Factory (Fábrica da Pólvora de Barcarena) where, in December 1999, we celebrated the club's 18th anniversary.

What we found is quite different from what we remember because this vast industrial heritage acquired by the Municipality of Oeiras, in 1994, underwent an extensive rehabilitation process so that today, circulating in the gardens, we can see the Saltpetre Houses (Casas do Salitre), the old workshops, warehouses and arsenals spread over its two large areas separated by the Barcarena stream, given that water was essential to the process of making munitions.

Founded by D. João II (r. 1481-1495) for the manufacture of gunpowder and the production of weapons in Ferrarias d'El Rei, the Royal Gunpowder Factory (Real Fábrica da Pólvora) was reopened in 1729 and worked for close to five hundred years until its closure, in 1988.

It was the most important black gunpowder factory in the country and that’s what the Black Gunpowder Museum (Museu da Pólvora Negra) tells us, installed in the Fábrica de Baixo building, also a unique example for this function, and with origins in the 17th century. It is structured in four nuclei that deal with the invention, diffusion and composition of this explosive; the Engenho das Galgas; and the manufacturing activity in the 19th and 20th centuries. Finally, it shows the creation of the Limited Liability Cooperative - Society of Credit and Consumption of the Employees of the Fábrica da Pólvora de Barcarena, which highlights the social consequences of the Industrial Revolution with the emergence of the working class and their associative movements.

Lunch was served by the Maria Pimenta restaurant, after which the prizes were given to the first three ranked in the two Regularity Rallies made in the outskirts of the factory.

Then, some said goodbye and others headed for the Club's headquarters to participate in another Ordinary General Assembly.
