MG L1 Continental Coupe 1934

Most MG's are commonly thought of as 4 cylinder cars, the modern exceptions are of course the MGC and MGB GT V8, however in earlier times there was a tradition of 6 cylinder MG's starting with the 18/80 range that was introduced in 1928. The cars that really set the foundation of this tradition were the MG Magnas and Magnet-tes that were produced between 1932 and 1936, the most popular being the F type Magna with a production run of 1250 cars. There was a definite gap in the MG range in the early thirties and Cecil Kimber realised that they had to produce something midway between the very successful 8 horsepower Midgets and at the other end of the scale the 18/80 range.

MG NB Magnette 1934

It was in 1932 that Cecil Kimber introduced the Magnette name to a new series of cars. The 18/ 80 was nearing the end of its useful production life and it was at the 1932 Motor Show that a new 6 cylinder car was announced, designated the 'K' Series following on in logical sequence from the ' J' types. This new model was to be an important basis for a new racing car to compete in the 1100cc Class and was powered by a 1087cc straight six engine.

MG ND Magnette 1934

The MG Car Company was in a very commanding position in the early thirties, being the only company that were dedicated solely to the manufacture of sports cars. They had earned tremendous recognition and built a reputation second to none on their unfailing successes in racing and competition, particularly with small capacity engines. Cecil Kimber had always recognised the sales potential of associating the production cars very closely with the racing models and in 1932 a new series of cars designated K Type, was introduced into the model range which encompassed a variant built specifically for racing.

MG PA Midget 1934

The P type Midget was launched in March 1934 as the replacement for the J2. It is well recognised that the P type had similarities with previous Magnas and Magnettes and its parentage derived from the M and J types. 'Autocar' magazine road tested the P type in November of that year and reported "This latest model is a marked improvement in all respects over its forerunners". Sales literature produced by Abingdon claimed, "In all there are over one hundred new and improved features".

MG Q-Type Midget 1934

Produced solely for competition purposes only eight Q Types were built by Abingdon at the latter end of 1934. Aspiring race drivers were offered the Q type with the same bore and stroke of the earlier 750 cc P Types. The same block and head were employed, however a special crank and push rods were used which were specially strengthened and latterly employed on most of the overhead cam racing engines.

MG TB Midget 1939

Launched in May 1939, the TB did not look anything different from the TA and it was not until the bonnet was opened that the differences became apparent. However, there were some cosmetic changes externally, with the wire wheels now becoming centre laced as opposed to side laced on the TA and the semaphore type traffic indicators that were evident below the windscreen pillars on the TA were dropped on the two seater TBs but retained on the drophead coupes.

MG TD Midget 1949

The MG TD can rightfully be described as the most popular of all the T series Midgets, following closely in the tracks of the TC Midget which was the car that put MG on a firm footing in the United States. The fact that the TC had become an overnight success in the American market helped secure a bright future for MG both at home and abroad.

MG Maestro 2.0i 1984

The MG Maestro EFi and later badged 2.0i was the car the MG Maestro should have been when the model was launched in 1983. As it was it was not announced until October 1984, but at a stroke took the car from a trailing also ran into a position of class leader and one which turned the establishment on its head. The leader at the time was the iconic Golf GTi and in all dynamic aspects the 2 litre electronically injected, digital ignition O series engine was in front.

MG Montego 2.0i 1984

Just a year after the successful launch of the Maestro (LM10) its bigger brother the Montego (LM11) was introduced by Austin Rover in April 1984 at a press launch staged in the South of France. The Montego used the existing floor-pan of the Maestro but was made wider by 2" in the wheelbase which provided more legroom for the rear seat passengers. About 60% of the panels were the same as the Maestro, but the Montego was strictly a four door saloon and measuring nearly 16" longer than the Maestro was overall a larger car.

MG SV & SVR 2004

The MG SV was the pet project of the MG Rover senior management to create a halo model for the modern MG range. It was a complete departure from all previous model MGs with the only possible comparable model being the 1930’s K3 Magnette. The project was of questionable value to the company or MG sales and was priced between 65,000 and 85,000 UK pounds, and certainly diverted resources that could have been focussed on more profitable mainstream models. The discussion surrounding all aspects of this model will be sure to be a long term MG discussion point.
